1954- born Bar Harbor Maine, to Charlene Louise (Bunker) and Donald Landis Allen. 1957- family moves to Merced, Califiornia, brother Gary Leland Allen born later that year. 1959- moves to Holyoke, Massachusetts, begins 1st grade. 1961- moves to Punta Borinquen, Puerto Rico lives on military base there during Cuban missile crisis and Kennedy assasination. 1964- moves to Napa Valley, California, begins drawing in earnest. 1965- father volunteers for Vietnam duty and family moves to ancestral home on Great Cranberry Island, Maine enrolls in one-room, (Longfellow) school on island. 1966- attends and is deeply influenced by annual summer art exhibition of seasonal island artists including Jack Heliker, Gretna Campbell, Louis Finkelstein, William Kienbusch, Carl Nelson, Robert LaHotan and others. 1967- teacher at Longfellow School invites local artists to teach in the early fall (before artists depart for NYC/Boston). Exhibition of student work is organized at the local church, Carl Nelson and Jack Heliker take note of Larry's abstract painting of a stained glass window. 1968- family Thanksgiving celebration includes the artist, John Lorence who spends the afternoon with Larry working on a self-portrait. 1969- graduates from the Longfellow School and enrolls in boarding school at Lee Academy in Maine and includes long distance running and art classes among pursuits. 1970- father returns from extended duty in Vietnam. 1971- suspended from Lee Academy for discipinary issues including taking part in anti-war protests. 1972- enrolls in Mt. Desert Island school, becomes state champion runner. 1973- graduates in June, enlists in USAF, attends basic training in San Antonio Texas. 1974- stationed in Altus Oklahoma works in Strategic Air Command, Command Post. 1977- honorably discharged from USAF, enrolls at University of Maine on GI Bill competes as runner on athletic team. 1979- completes the Boston Marathon. 1981- graduates from University of Maine with BA and high honors. 1981-83- lives and works in Bangor, Maine, completes first series of abstacts on paper, later destroyed. 1984- daughter, Jennifer Elizabeth Allen born July 12. 1984-89- lives and works in Gainesville, Florida, competes first large scale paintings on canvas. 1989-93- returns to Maine and attends graduate school at University of Maine while working and painting with increasing frequency. 1993- accepts position as executive for publisher in Birmingham Alabama, spends early mornings, lunch hours and evenings painting. 1994- meets Jack Heliker at 4th of July picnic and spends time looking at work and discussing the daily practice of drawing. 1995- attends studio art program at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. 1998- relocates from Birmingham to NYC to pursue art and publishing interests, buys house in Stratford Connecticut and begins work on studio in a shed on the property. 1999- marries Kristen Estelle Blodgette and begins position in publishing at the Museum of Modern Art, begins friendship with artist/staff, curators and artists represented in the catalogues. 2000- Jack Heliker passes away in Bar Harbor after long illness. 2000- enrolls at Art Students League in NYC. 2000- work accepted for staff exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, first public exhibition of work since 1968 exhibition on Great Cranberry Island. 2001- completes "City Morning" while sick with pneumonia. 2001-03- begins exhibiting work annually in group shows in NYC and Maine. 2002- Robert LaHotan passes away in Maine after a brief illness 2003- completes series of 12 small abstracts and 4 larger paintings over a 3 month period. 2004- responsibilities associated with reopening the Museum of Modern Art on 53rd St do not allow for painting for a year. 2005- leave of absence from position as a Director of Publishing the Museum of Modern Art to paint, spends 2 months on Great Cranberry and completes series of 6 large works. 2005- "Great Cranberry" exhibited in group show featuring "The Art of the Cranberry Isles" including artists that worked on the island over the last half-century. 2005- first solo exhibition, "Summer's Work" attended by over 200 island residents. 2005- two paintings selected for first juried exhibition, "War and Peace, 2005" in Stockton, New Jersey. 2005- resigns position from the Museum of Modern Art to pursue paintings full time. 2006- new studio in Stratord completed. 2006- Gallery 170 in Damariscotta agrees to represent work and to plan a solo exhibition. 2006- website, lawrenceedgarallen.com, designed and launched by Mary Ropp 2006- Solo exhibition at Shaw Gallery in Northeast Harbor, ME 8/3-8/16 2006-2007- Group Exhibition at Gallery 170 in Darmariscotta, ME 12/8/06-1/16/07 2006-2007- Group Exhibition at the Alan Freshman Fine Arts Gallery in Beacon, NY 12/29/06-2/15/07 |
